Check-In Assignment 3

On the job feedback is an essential component to professional growth. Often workers fail to get an understanding of how supervisors or managerial staff appraises their performance. This may result from hectic schedules and/or the reluctance to seek feedback from a superior.

How would you rate your on the job performance thus far? Explain.

Would you supervisor say anything contrary to your self-assessment?

In what ways have you sought feedback from your supervisor? How did their feedback make you feel?

  1. I feel like I have done my job well and have tried my best to commit to the job. I have allowed my schedule to be very flexible to benefit the teachers whom I work with.I have had to work some full days, meaning I work from 8am to 6pm which allowed me to spend more time with the children and teachers. I have observed and attempted to solve the problems that I could before they got too out of hand. For example if one kid starts a fight I try to separate him or her from the rest before they all start hitting each other..which happens often.I have not talked to the director about how I have been doing personally but the teachers whom I work with have told me I am doing a great job and they enjoy having me there. I was glad to hear one of them encourage me to work with her next year.I made my day to know that my coworkers enjoy having me there.

  2. I think that I have done a great job so far. I have done my best to listen and absorb all of the knowledge I have gotten so far. every week since I have started I have had at least one article in the paper. i believe that my supervisor also thinks I am doing a good job as she has said to me that she is impressed and believes that I am very enthusiastic about my work. I have improved my writing skills and I ask questions when I do not understand something. my supervisor has told me when they think I can improve a story on what I can do to make a story the "wow factor" My supervisor is very helpful and keeps me busy. I enjoy my job and think that although I am doing a good job there is always room for improvement.

  3. I think I've done a good job so far. I'm trying my best to keep up with everything ans learn the things that one employee has to do so that when she leaves in the next couple of weeks I can easily fill in her spot. I believe my supervisors also believe the same. I have tried my best to do everything that i am needed to do Of course I need to improve on a couple things but i am changing so that i can possibly end up earning a job here.

In one case i helped one of my bosses and two clients in an EBT translating and without me asking for feedback he made it well known to me and everyone at the office that i did a great job. other than that i haven't gotten much feed back but i will do my best to ask.

  4. So far I think I have done a good job working at the Little Gym. I have put a lot of energy, time and dedication. However, that is not the case according to one of my supervisors/co-workers who has an issue with me. I've done everything they asked me to do. I work my hardest everyday, and I still continue to do that. I have worked to the schedule they given me. Talking one of the co-owners and telling me about how I'm doing so far, my self-assessment is good so far and I can improve on a few things. I have sought feedback by asking for help whenever I needed it.

  5. these past few days that i have worked with my fellow coleages and it was going well until recently where a turn of events made me and freddy going to wall street and picking up metrocards. before this event made a major turn it was going very well until that day recently where my superviosors have been upset because me and freddy were suppose to meet up on that same day to the camp because it was a trip the same day me and freddy didnt know it was a big deal because we got lost and fone died on us so we couldnt communicate with them and we felt we tried eveything we ran out of money to use the public fones and then we went back to the camp thinking that was the right thing to do then we get yelled at and we get shot down saying it was inresponsible of us and we was like WTF i went home upset and disapointed then the next day which was today we went there extra early to make up for the other day and at the end of the day it went well till the very end when we got back frum a short trip another lil slip up happend me and freddy were happy to be done and recover frum that day till todays ending when the kids turn all crazy and start punching and slaping us out of nowhere saying lets wrestle and they jump on us like maniacs so we try to get them off but they still jump on us so things got a lil out of hand so we start to put them on the floor gently till they really go all out and say get freddy and jason so i actually got into it and actually started to wrestle them so i said in my head if i pin them they would stay out like in a real wrestle so i tried it and it worked until the supervisor came in and freaked out i did it very gently no injuries and i guess it was right of her to panic for safety but as before another turn of events happened and me and freddy get put down so we were down for a while till the arts program that was peacefull i would rate myself a star 8 till now i would say for all the bad that occured i would say a 5 like WTF that was bull

the supervisor stated straight up that if we pulled sumthing like this again wed be asked to leave so now im pissed and ima have to make sure to not make myslef known anymore be under the radar asusual so what i do now is just pkay with the kids and if they touch me i will put them into place make them not jump on me anymore cause me an freddy baby them we look out for them to let them know when the supervisors come
maybe the supervisor would contray but i thought it this is what they would agree with the feedback that i sought wasnt what i looked for he said it was very irresponsible and id get kicked out like woa so i took it as okay changge of plans nomore mr nice guy angrey face its over nomore games

  6. In my opinion these past couple of days have not been the highlight of working at the camp. The reason why is because, I recently disappointed my staff members by not showing up for a trip at Al Smiths. The trip took place the same day I needed to go pick up the unlimited metro card. While I was doing that the staff said I could meet them at Al Smiths. I ended up getting the metro right before I was receiving the final steps to getting to the place my batteries died. Jason and I decided to go follow the direction but while we were there. We spent all of our money paying for phone booths to try and communicate with our colleagues. After hours of walking and asking for directions we decided to go back to the regular campsite hoping there would be someone to instruct us. When we arrived the place was deserted so, we decided to wait patiently until they arrived. Once the staff saw us they immediately started to make us feel worthless because we did not go and how we disappointed them. Today, I was in another mess because while in free time the kids came from the park hyper they decided to jump on me, knowing I cannot do anything back to them I just kept on sitting them back down. Then the supervisor saw and thought I was horsing around with the kids so she said the next time she sees me with the kids that way I would get fired. Therefore these past couple of days I would give myself a 4 since I know I failed to be above expectations. My supervisor may say that I have been fine until today. Today after my mishap I decided to sought for feedback and the staff just told me to keep doing what I was doing before today.

  7. The past few days that I've worked i think its been going great. so far i haven't gotten into any trouble and I've been coming in on time. well, except that Friday that me and Naomi didn't go but only because we understood we were only supposed to work Mon.- Thurs. but other than that i think i would rate myself a 7 cause I'm doing pretty good as a counselor but I'm not perfect either. and I think the kids some what respect me and have fun with me. plus the staff there are really outgoing and funny and i think they enjoy my presence.

  8. So far, I think that I am doing a fairly well at my job, but there is also a need for some improvements. I also got some good feedback from some of the parents of the children I watch which makes me feel like I am doing something right. I don’t think that my supervisor would say anything contradictory to the job that I am doing, because she has also given me compliments on the way that I do things. Even though I feel that I am working my hardest, and being very dedicated to what I am doing, I feel as if I should be putting in even more work. I would rate myself at a 7/8, being as I could improve in the way that I handle the children and try to be more patient since I work with the youngest group. After getting my some feedback, it made me feel good that I was making my supervisor proud to have me working there, since she saw so much in me and how well I was taking care of the children.

  9. The days i have been working at my site have been amazing i have made a great connection between me and the kids. Y supervisor has only come to me for something really little which was talking about not giving out numbers to the students and just the day before she told us i did it so i felt pretty guilty. She only told me to delete the number and for future references say no to all of that which only happened once. Also they have told me ive been doing a good job because ive learned to teach the kids im not only playful i also have my strict side so not to take me for a joke beause they tend to play too much with me. In all honestly some days when im tired i dont give my best but i take my energies from somewhere so that the kids won't feel like i am pushing them away. I would rate myself a 8.5 because im not the best nor the worst but i would be close the kids adore me just like i do too which means they listen. I am thankful for the feedback because in any other situation i would of made the same mistake if i wasnt told.
I tend to ask them how am i doing or i shoot up a conversatin and talk about my own assesment so i have the iniative and don't to have to wait for them to come and tell me.

  10. @ Jetson and Freddy
I agree with the challenges that were encountered because we have similar experiences with the kids. Hopefully for the rest of our journey we learn from our mistakes.

  11. My performance so far, in my experience of this journey has been great. This is a work field that I always wanted to work with so, I have alot of knowledge on the topic. The kids are easy to control once you know what ticks them and what makes them happy. You also need to show that you are strict before they decide to take over. I rate myself as a 9.5 because the kids love me they enjoy spending time with vice versa. The only mistakes I make is when my sleepiness takes over and the children may do something they are not supposed to do. No she will agree with what I am saying because she can tell I enjoy my job. I have only received positive feedback, the feedback made me feel superb.

  14. One scale of 1-10,I would rate my performance thus far an 8. I made an effort to connect with the kids I work with early on in the internship, which has made it easier to act as a role model. When the kids know and understand you, they become less reluctant towards you. I've learned that the more you open up to the kids, the more they respect and appreciate you.I put the kids first in every situation and make sure they're always having a good time. I think my supervisor would agree with what I've said. My supervisor treats me as an equal and not as a teenage summer youth worker. I have gained the trust of my supervisor and I've proved that I am responsible, which is why I am treated differently than the other summer youth workers.

  15. Feeding off Fatima...I do feel a negative vibe from one of the staff members. The best way to deal with that is to stay out of there way and not put yourself in a situation where confrentation can occur. You are not there to make friends and not everyone is going to like you,it's life. Trust me I have PLENTY of haters.lol
But as far as your supervisor is pleased with you, then your job is done. Another thing you should NEVER do is get yourself involved in the drama within the adult staff. It's the easiest way to get yourself in the middle of a situation you have nothing to do with !I see that some of the people I work with are getting too involved in the personal lives of the adult staff members and I'm just waiting for it to backfire, because I know it will.

  16. I think I’m doing Pretty Good at my Job. I became pretty flexible do to the fact that I don’t have specific time schedule. Some days I come in at 1 other days 10, so I’ve really learned to adjust. I do a variety of things such as filing papers, typing files up, and answer phones. I like working there. My supervisor has constantly told me no matter what check over your work. I think that was good feedback because even if you think you did your work correctly you should still check over your work at least 2 if not 3 times.

  17. Thus I feel that I have done my duties acceptionally well. So far I have done everything that has been asked of me. However taking care of kids is a different situation every day and the job can become very fickle. In many circumstances I am forced to take actions that aren't asked of me. Because I take those actions as opposed to ignoring the situation, I feel like I have been doing my job well. My supervisor would say that I have been doing wahat I need to do. At the beginning of work my supervisor asked me to always be interacting with the kids and always be busy and I have done exactly that. It is difficult to ask for feedback due to the fact that my supervisor is rarely ever at my place of work. However, in due time I will be sure to ask.

    ReplyDelete
  18. @AWelbeck I agree with your post. At my job, I do what is asked of me and then some. Also, my supervisor is not there that often so whenever there's an opportunity to do more, after I've finished what I’m told, I take it.

  20. i would rate my performance on the job on a scale from 0-10 a 9. not to be overly confident but i know that i have been doing very well on my job because my supervisor and his assistant have told me so. My suprervisors way of doing things is everything has to be to the T. I think i have been able to fullfill his requirements because he reminds me everyday about how well i am doing

  21. because i work with private lawyers i get to get a hands on experience on their specific cases, not a full glance on the situations but i provide enough help to the four lawyers that occupy that space.

  22. my supervisor provides me with alot of feedback in which i take and apply it to my next assignment. i feel comfortable at my job knowing that their feedback whether it be good or bad is for my own good and for me to better myself to fit into y supervisors way of working.

  23. Before Friday I had not had a one on one talk with the director of the program in order to get feedback but I was glad to hear that I am doing a great job even though I have had some slips. Like one time I forgot that we could not transport the children by ourselves and so when a teacher asked me to take a child back to their classroom I followed her instructions and when I was taking the child back the director reminded me that I could not transport the children, though since it was only one teacher I would have broken the rules anyways because I am not allowed to stay alone in the room with the children either , even though there is a camera in every room. She was really upset at 4 other youth workers that do not follow the rules that she handed out on the first week we were there , since I am always one of the first people in the building I saw when all of the teachers came in and immediately started complaining about how some people were not following the rules or being good role models for the kids. But she told me that all of the KIPP youth workers were doing fine but that only one youth worker from the other program is doing fine.

  24. Thus far i would rate myself an 8. In my opinion i think i am doing a great job.I have done everything i have been asked to do and i have already learned the schedule and how everything works. The kids really like me and love to have me around .I enjoy spending time with the kids .I never knew at that age that they are so advanced. The only thing that has probably brought down my peformance is that i have showed up late but thats about it.

  25. On a scale of 1-10, I would give myself a 7 so far. I feel that this is a worthy rating because I have excelled in certain things but I still have to work on other stuff. One thing that I feel I have excelled in is working with my team. Over the course of these two weeks, I worked well with my team and we’ve gotten a lot of work done. For example, this past week, I was able to help my team create a very interesting PowerPoint for our Friday presentation. At the same time, I feel that I need to work on being more of a vocal leader for my team. Right now, my role on my team is to really supply ideas but I know that I have the ability to supply a bigger role. Because of these reasons, I feel that my supervisor will rate me the same way. She may say that I’ve done a good job so far because I helped my team win the first challenge this week. On the other hand, I wasn’t the team leader so I didn’t live up to my full potential.

  26. Thus far, I would rate my job performance as an 8 because so far I have done everything that my supervisor has told me to do to the best of my ability. I have done my best to listen to the people around me and applying their advice to the work that I do on a weekly basis. I think that my supervisor would agree because for the last two weeks she has said that I seem really focused whenever she gives me something to do. This shows that I have learned that when you stay focused on something your supervisor will noticed and whatever you were doing will come out great. I really have not sought feedback from my supervisor but for the last two weeks when I have turned in my article for that week's paper she says that I did a great job. This made me feel like I am more than capable of doing anything that my supervisor needs me to do no matter how challenging it is.

  27. ON a scale of 1-10 i would give myself a 7. i think i have done a great job with the kids and interacting with them. I am actively engaged and i enjoy spending time with them. I think that sometimes i get distracted on my phone and lose focus on work. For example, sometimes the kids watch movies and i use my phone if im bored. Also, i'm late for work on many occasions which is problematic as well. Im working on both flaws to make sure i am an excellent worker.

    ReplyDelete
  28. When i spoke to my supervisor about my performance she told me i was great with the kids, they loved me and enjoyed my presence. She did say that my problems were my cell phone and my attendance. Regardless of both things, she did say that the kids enjoyed working with me and loved to be around me. I agree with all that she has said because it is what i believe about myself at work. i think that these 2 things are some of the main issues that teens face in the workplace today. In order to solve these issues, i am going to turn my phone off and place it in my bag during work hours. as for my attendance i will leave 15 minutes earlier and set multiple alarms in my room to wake me up.

    ReplyDelete
  29. @ Joddie and Fatima When you feel a negative vibe from a co worker, i agree to not let it escalate. me personally, Being outspoken, i would ask the co worker if their was a problem with me. Depending on the answer i would move on and call it a day. I will not jeopardize my money or my job over a person. If they do things to intimidate me, i would tell the supervisor. I mean, if i really didn't care about the job then that would be a different story however, one must remember that record follows you as you search for other jobs.

  30. Yeah,I agree with Denise. My supervisor refers to the Kipp youth workers as the A team and the summer youth workers as the B team.lol
The Kipp workers are perferred to go on the trips because we are viewed as more responsible.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have really enjoyed working with the kids in the camp as well as with my KIPP colleagues. I think I have a good relationship with the kids that I work with. I do everything my supervisors tell me to do and I have not yet come across any issues. The only problem is that the supervisors aren’t always in sync and at times when I do something I am told to do by one supervisor, another becomes somewhat aggravated. I think that my supervisors agree that I’ve tried to get to know the kids pretty well and fulfill my job accordingly. The one piece of feedback that I have received from one of my supervisors is to try to take initiative to design my own ideas for alternative ways that the kids could spend their time while they wait to move on to another activity. Because I work with 6-7 year olds, they are often impatient and hyper whenever they have to sit still, and it can become tiresome to watch after them and repeatedly speak to them while they are in that state. A supervisor mentioned that if I could find a way to distract them during that time, my job would become less tiresome.

  32. If I were to rate my self on a scale from 1-10, with one being the worst and ten being the best, I would give myself a 7.5 for now. I am very active with the children, and I try and help out a lot. However, my awareness can be off sometimes, due to the fact that I wake up pretty early daily, and I go to sleep at 11:30 -12, but not before. I know I can be better, but I also acknowledge that I do a pretty good job in the first place. As of now, I do not believe my supervisor would say anything contrary to what I believe I would do.

  33. This year, I have not asked my supervisor what I should work on, due to time limitations on her part, but I definitely plan to. However, I had her as a supervisor last year, and at that point, she did answer me. She said that I was doing a good job with the kids, but I need to be more assertive. I feel as if I have definitely been making an effort to be more assertive this year, at the same time as being a likable counselor for the kids.

  34. On a scale from one to ten, I would rate myself a 7. I participate in the work my team is working on, but I feel as though there is a lack of communication on my part. So far as my fourth week I feel that I really enjoy my worksite and my coworkers. I provide suggests when my team is at a deadlock. My supervisor has not been in the area this past week but she left one of her coworkers in charge and I would believe she would rate me the same. When my supervisor comes back this week, I will for sure ask her for any suggests on my performance.

  35. So far since I started working I can honestly say I have been doing a great job. I get to work way before the time I'm suppose to be there so that way I can make sure I get all the work I need done in the morning. So that the children at my work place can have a safe and clean place to learn and play . There is nothing my supervisor can say that is negative about at all. I only get complemented on how great my work is and how quickly I do it and start the next task. My supervisor is someone who does not sugar code anything. I don't believe my supervisor will disagree with anything that i said. If there is anything she wants to say she will tell u the same.

    ReplyDelete
  36. i would rate myself a 7 thus far on my job performance. I say this because i always do what they tell me and if they dont and i see that it needs to be done i still do it. Also because i try to do it quickly and i was never late. I dont think my supervisor would say anything contrary. I havent gotten in trouble and shes always saying great. I havent really sought feedback because if there was a problem i guess she would tell me and she always says great.

    ReplyDelete
  37. If someone asked me to rate my job performance out of 5 stars, I would give myself 4. I feel that I did very good at my job. Interning at KIPP STAR has been a great experience. It feels like KIPP all over again. Even though most of my classmates might feel differently, I kind of missed that feeling. 5th graders singing their timetables. 6th graders being able to try out for sports for the first time. 7th graders starting to look at high schools. 8th graders celebrating their last year. I have experienced all of that before. Being able to help teachers, deliver supplies, file information.... It has all been fun. However, I dont think that I did the best I could do. I am still being shy. I do talk to the other interns, but it usually work related. When we go out for lunch, I stay silent the whole time. One of my goals was to not let this happen. I wanted to be able to make new friends, friends that I can be with during work and outside of work. However, my boss would have probably given me 5 out of 5 stars. Every day her and the other teachers say thank you to me at least 10 times a day. I help them out a lot, even if I just put a fan together. They welcome the extra help. They already have a lot of things to do. I havent really asked them for feedback. I figured that I was doing everything right since nobody told me otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I would rate my self my self a 8.5 because I make my job fun and make the little kids smile and feel like their home. Also, I show new moves and ways the little kids could get better. I just don't let the kids succeed the challenge they have, I'll push the kids to succeed a step better than good enough. This would help the kids push their self to the limit. For example,I would tell a kid to do a front roll flip. As they compelete the directions,I'll give positive feedback and another way they could do better in the front roll flip.

My supervisor said,"She is glad about the hard work I been putting in with the work ,and keep up the hard work. Also, she loves the effort and the leadership I take to help and guide the classes. Finally, for making the kids feel like there at home playing at the Little Gym."

The sought feedback I would get from my supervisor is positive and other ways I could do better at work even if I am doing fine. My supervisor motivated me to go for the extra step. Taking that extra step would help me be a better person and help me become more successful.

I am glad I got the feedback from my supervisor because it shows me where I am and how can I get better. My supervisor makes me feel comfortable where I work at and I am thankful for where Working where I work today.

  39. I agree with Marhelich the teachers that I work with always send me to do things like taking the kids to the bathroom and things of that sort , which our director has already told them what we are allowed to do. Its confusing at times because the director tells me one thing but the teacher who I'm supposed to be helping tells me otherwise. So I always have to be aware of what the rules are because the teachers are not always in agreement. Also, most of the people who I work with are Philippians and so they get along with the director who is also from the Philippines and most of the time I do not understand what they are saying to each other since it is another language.I feel like i am doing everythiing to the best of my ability and i am glad to be getting along well with all of my co workers.

  40. Thus far, I would rate my performance an 8.64995 out of ten. I have been of great help whenever it was needed although there were times that my assistance wasn’t needed and I didn’t put myself to use some other way. I have always been there on time and most of the time I have arrived early than my coworkers. My supervisor loves me. She would say that I always do the best that I can in any situation. She might notice too that during the times that I wasn’t told to do anything I would just relax a little bit. I always thought that if the job gets done, it doesn’t matter how fast you’re doing it. So far I haven’t really sought out any feedback but some of my coworkers have said that me along with the other intern are doing a great job, and the work that we are putting in is really making a difference. Our help is allowing the staff to work on other things that otherwise they wouldn’t have the time to work on. This feedback made me want to work harder to continue to make a difference in the library.

  41. Well due to a sickness I missed a day of work and we had the editor in chief husband come and talk to the interns that day I was out. he said that I shouldnt have missed that day because i am only working there for 5 weeks and I should have came in to show my boss i was sick and she would have sent me home. I feel as though that I was sick that whole week and still came in and my boss told me several times that if I was sick i didnt have to come in. I feel bad because maybe i shouldnt have missed that day but I was extremely sick and had to go to the doctor and my bossed was informed so I dont know if I should be worried about the editor in chief's husband saying that was wrong.

  44. I received feedback today and when you get it from a person older than you that cares enough that observed what I did wrong. He wasn’t really my boss but he has time with the kids and he told me that I have to be more interactive even though I am but I was sitting down. He recommended us to hear him and act on it because he wants us to improve and be better.
Well right now i know my supervisor would agree that I’m doing a good job and all because the kids listen to me and most of the time they come to me when they need something or when something went wrong.

  45. At work thus far, I Would rate myself an 8.5. I would rate myself an 8.5 because I have done everything that is asked of me. My director informed the workers that our job is to interact with the children & take care of them ; and Since day 1 I have done just that. My director also informed the youth workers that there were cameras everywhere. This made me feel uncomfortable because it seemed as if I was being watched constantly. However, the cameras also boosted me to have everything positive at all times. The teacher that I work with recently stated that she is thankful to have me in her room. She told me that the some teachers were complaining about their youth workers, but she had nothing negative to say about me. Infact she also stated that I keep a positive attitude , and I know my enviorement very well. Her feedback brought a smile to my face

  46. In my opinion my job performance thus far has been excellent. I have excelled in every job assignment given at work wiether it was running a class or even cleaning the bathroom. I would give myself a 9.5 because I know while at work I am very professional and efficent. It is evident that I am doing a through job at work because I am offered several words of ecouragement by my supervisors constantly. I also know I am doing sa great job because I was asked to continue work in the fall...
